Corruption has been one of the major concerns of many countries. It has become a major problem in every country because billions of money would be wasted instead of helping in increasing social development of a country. Corruption may also decrease the country’s capacity to improve its public administration and governance towards development. Corruption is simply the cause of unequal distributions of resources thus the existence of poverty.
Three primary causes of corruption that was named by Palmier, the author that I've encountered was the low salaries of the government officials. He identified that low salaries tempts the official to corrupt in order to meet half of his basic needs to live. The second cause of corruption identified by Palmier was numerous opportunities. In government agencies with weak policing, another named causes of corruption by Palmier.
Personally I believe that this issue, is one of the most prevalent in all countries. It has become accepted as part of the culture, citizens are now being indifferent with this issue may also pose some problems. But what else can they do about it? To quote Professor Jon Quah regarding this issue: “Corruption is one of the most damaging consequences of poor governance. It undermines investment and economic growth, decreases the resources available for human development goals, deepens the extent of poverty, subverts the judicial system, and undermines the legitimacy of the state. In fact, when corruption becomes entrenched, it can devastate the entire economic, political, and social fabric of a country…corruption breeds corruption – and a failure to combat it effectively can lead to an era of entrenched corruption.”
The question now would be, who has the power to eradicate corruption?
